Speed Skating Hall of Fame

Geir Karlstad

Born: July 7, 1963 - Lillestrøm (NOR)

Geir Karlstad, from Lillestrøm, was one of the best long distance skaters during the 1980s. He was unlucky during the Olympic Games in 1984 and 1988, but he finally got his deserved Olympic gold in Albertville 1992; he won the 5000 meters and he got a bronze medal on the 10,000 meters.

In the Olympic season 1987/1988 he started the season by lowering the 5000 meters world record twice, and lowering both the 5000 and the 10,000 meters world record at the opening races of the Olympic Oval in Calgary. Naturally he was one of the favourites for the Olympic Games at the same rink, but he was out of shape and failed. He placed 7th on the 5000 meters and fell and never finished his 10,000 meters.

He started his international career by winning the World Junior Championships 1982. He had 10 distance wins and 27 podium positions in international senior championships, but his sprint was not good enough, and his only championships medal were bronze medals in the World and European Championships 1989. He was World Cup winner 5000/10,000 meters in 1987 and 1992 and he won 17 World Cup races through his career.

Karlstad had decided to continue until the Olympic Games on his home ground, but he was badly injured in his back when preparing for the season 1992/93, and he had to end his speed skating career.

From 1998 to 2002, he was the national team coach of the Norwegian speed skating team.

He was awarded the Oscar Mathisen Award in 1986.

Highest rank on the Adelskalender: 7 (1987).
