Jan Egil Storholt

Born: February 13, 1949 - Løkken (NOR)

Jan Egil Storholt, born in Løkken southwest of Trondheim, was one of the Norwegian S'es in the end of the 1970s. He became Olympic 1500 m champion 1976, after a close race with the Russian Yuri Kondakov.

He was a promising junior skater, and won the national junior championships 1969. He was almost killed in a mining accident 1970, and he was told he would probably not skate at a top level again. But Storholt was determined to get back, and by 1972 he was back in the Norwegian top. When most of the top Norwegian skaters turned professional in 1973 he was suddenly one of the best amateur speed skaters in Norway. But it wasn't until Johs Tenmann started coaching the Norwegian skaters that Storholt got any international success.

He became European champion 1977 and 1979 and he placed among the top 4 in 7 consecutive European Championships (1975-1981). He was the runner-up for the World title, only beaten by Eric Heiden, 3 consecutive years (1977-1979). He had 8 single distance wins in these tournaments, and 30 podium positions.

In 1977 the conditions were excellent during the country match between Soviet Union and Norway at Medeo in Alma Ata, and Storholt used the opportunity to set two World Records (1500 m and allround combination) and 5 Personal Bests and climb to the top of the Adelskalender. He was the first to top the Adelskalender with 4 personal records set in the same race. He reigned at the top of the Adelskalender for 14 days in 1977 and 16 days in 1978, but both years he was beaten by a Russian before the season ended.

He was a member of the most successfull sports club in the history of Olympic speed skating - "Falken" (the falcon) from Trondheim. Falken brought up three Olympic 1500 m champions: Hjalmar Andersen (triple Olympic champion 1952) and Sverre Farstad (Olympic champion 1948) in addition to Storholt.
