Sten Stensen

Born: December 18, 1947 - Drammen (NOR)

Sten Stensen, from Drammen, was one of the four Norwegian S'es at the end of the 1970s. He was Olympic 5000 meters champion 1976. As the World Record holder he was also a favourite for the 10,000 meters gold, but he was beaten by the Dutch Piet Kleine. He also got two Olympic bronze medals; on 5000 and 10,000 meters in 1972.

During the European Championships at Bislett 1976 he set a new 10,000 m World Record, but he still lost the title to Kay Arne Stenshjemmet by 0.005 points; or 0.1 seconds on the 10,000 meters. After losing both the Olympic 10,000 meters title and the World Record to Piet Kleine later this season, he beat him head-to-head and set a new World Record in the country match at Medeo in the end of the season.

When most of the top international skaters turned professional after the 1972 season Stensen was one of the best allround skaters still an amateur. He was second in the World Championships 1973, World champion 1974 and European champion 1975. He had 12 single distance wins in these tournaments, and 25 podium positions.

Also in his last year as an active skater, 1978, he was second in the European Championships. After he quit speed skating he was following speed skating very close as Norwegian Broadcasting's expert commentator on the inner lane.

He received the Oscar Mathisen Award in 1974 and 1976.

Highest rank on the Adelskalender: 4 (1976).
